The Conference is being jointly organised by the TUC and the Working Lives Research Institute and will launch a booklet containing a number of recommendations for trade unions that have emerged from the results of a 3-year comparative research project looking at racial and ethnic minorities, immigration and the role of trade unions in combating racism. The effects of the CFDT’s action research on racial discrimination
Seven years after the appearance of Philippe Bataille’s book «
Le racisme
au travail », i.e. ‘Racism at Work’ the CFDT wanted to analyse
the effects
of this action research from two points of view: the national
institutional level and local realities. The union’s research department
has carried out a research of which we publish the abstract:

Papers of the workshop ‘Dire’, on racist discrimination at work,
organized
by the CGT and EMERGENCES in January 2004 :
A day of exchanging ideas organized around three workshops: The place of
discrimination in France. Discrimination in business: Contributions by
representatives of workers. What are the means for action against
discrimination?

International Trade Union House (ITUH)
Boulevard du Roi Albert II, n°5, 1000 Bruxelles
Room B, First floor
You are cordially invited to the first conference of an EU-funded research project on trade unions, racism and xenophobia, ‘Working against Racism: European Trade Unions and Anti-Racist Organisations’, to be held at International Trade Union House, Brussels, from 14:00 to 17:30 on 29 January 2004.
The conference will include an introduction to the project and reports on
its progress over its first year, and will publicly launch its European web
site ‘Working against Racism’, which we trust will become an invaluable
tool for the use of trade unions and anti-racist organisations throughout
Europe.
Speakers will include representatives of the ETUC, which fully supports this
project, and of European anti-racist and immigrants’ organisations.
The research project, ‘Racial and ethnic minorities, immigration and the role of trade unions in combating discrimination and xenophobia, in encouraging participation and in securing social inclusion and citizenship’ (RITU), is funded by the European Commission and coordinated by the Working Lives Research Institute at London Metropolitan University, with partners in Belgium, France, Italy, and Bulgaria. It has the full support of the ETUC and of major unions in the participating countries, many of whose representatives serve on each country’s national advisory board.
This will be the first major international study to look at the representation of black, ethnic minority and migrant workers at the workplace level in a comparative context, at three industrial sectors in each country, including public transport, public health, the retail industry, manufacturing, and other industries employing significant numbers of black, ethnic minority and migrant workers. The results, to be announced at a second conference in 2005, will make a significant contribution to understanding and tackling the problem of racism and xenophobia at the workplace and will assist unions, community and immigrant workers’ groups, and other anti-racist organisations to develop their own strategies.
We would very much welcome your participation in this conference, and would also appreciate it if you could inform other officials of your organisation who may be interested in the subject. Please feel free to contact me for further information about the project. We look forward to hearing from you soon.
Please register your wish to attend in advance to allow us to cater for refreshments by sending an email: tef@ulb.ac.be or by telephoning: 0032 2 650 33 62 or 00 32 2 650 31 83 or by faxing: 0032 2 650 33 35.
