Research Unit on Migration and Society (Unité de recherche Migrations

located in Paris (University Paris 7 Denis Diderot) and Nice (University
of Nice-Sophia Antipolis).
The Research Unit on Migration and Society (Unité de recherche Migrations et société URMIS) is a University and CNRS research centre located in Paris (University Paris 7 Denis Diderot) and Nice (University of Nice-Sophia Antipolis). It comprises 27 researchers who work in different disciplinary fields (sociology, anthropology, contemporary history, social psychology). They are involved in teaching and research on migration and ethnic relations, and have conducted numerous studies on ethnic relations in urban areas, cultural transmission in immigrant groups, national and local policies about integration, ethnic minorities and citizenship, racism and ethnicity, discriminatory practices at school and in the workplaces… The Unit offers a PhD degree “Migration and Interethnic relations”, as well as a Data Base specialized on Migration and ethnic relations (REMISIS).
Jocelyne Streiff-Fenart is « Directrice de Recherche » at the CNRS (National Centre for Scientific Research), director of the Research Unit on Migration and Society (URMIS, UMR 7032). She is a sociologist, specialized on migrations and ethnic relations. She has carried studies on mariage and family relationships among immigrant in France, and on ethnic categorizations and identifications in multicultural settings.
Philippe Poutignat, sociologist, (ingénieur d’études au CNRS), has carried studies on communicative situations in plurilingual contexts in Black Africa. Next, he centered his work on the problematic of ethnicity and the ordinary uses of membership categories. These last years he has collaborated in many researchs conducted within the URMIS team about immigration, racism and discrimination in work setting.
Christian Rinaudo is Lecturer in the Sociology Department at Nice-Sophia Antipolis University. His researches focus on ethnic and racial relations in urban settings, with a special attention to social interactions in several contextes of everyday life : teachers/pupils relations at school, ethnic discriminations at work, sellers/customers relations in pluriethnic market places.
Véronique De Rudder, is sociologist, « chargée de recherche » au CNRS, and ex-director of the « Groupement de recherche Migrations Internationales et Relations Interethniques ». She worked on interethnic relations in housing and urban life. Since several years, she is involved, within the URMIS team, in researches on racism and discriminations, specially at the workplace.
Christian Poiret is « maître de conférences » at the Université de Haute Bretagne (Rennes 2). He is a sociologist specialised in interethnic relations and have worked on the African settlements in France. He worked also, since several years, on racism and discrimination, and on the processes of categorisation, in everyday life as in the social and urban policies.
